The Rotary Rubber Ducky Race committee regrets to announce the cancellation of this year’s race, scheduled to take place of July 4 in Florence.
Jason Messer, Chair of the Rotary Duck Race committee stated, “Our committee, comprised of members from both the Cañon City and Florence Rotary Clubs, thought long and hard about this decision. But, because our valuable sponsors are also affected by this COVID-19 pandemic, now is not the time to ask for sponsor dollars to help underwrite the hard costs of this yearly event.”
Jake Francis, President of the Cañon City Rotary Club added, “This yearly event, which raised a total of 30 thousand dollars last year, will leave a void in our communities. Our participating non-profits will also have to find ways to make up for the lost revenue from their share of ticket sales.”
Dale Gagas, President of the Florence Rotary Club concurred. “We plan to come back stronger than ever with our 2021 Rotary Rubber Ducky Race! But, in the meantime, let’s not forget the local non-profits and small businesses so strongly affected during this tough period of time.”
Both Rotary clubs have received matching grants from Rotary District 5470 through the district’s COVID Community Support Program to help with needs created by the pandemic. The clubs have used those funds to support multiple entities in Florence and Cañon City with a variety of assistance.
